The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention was first started with a few musicians meeting in a rural Limestone County kitchen. These musicians decided it was time to bring fiddling out of the kitchens and onto the stage. After a surprisingly response in two local fiddling contests held in Athens as a test, the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Association was formed in the summer of 1967. The Convention annually brings some 200 contestants and an estimated 15,000 fold music fans to the ground of historic Athens State University. Craftsman from around the area display their arts and crafts at the annual arts and crafts fair held in conjunction with the musical competition. The top fiddler receives $1,000 cash prize plus trophy.
